Sit down with your partner and both families early to discuss which traditions are most meaningful. Prioritize together and be open to compromise. Every family has non-negotiables - identify them early.
Consider having two ceremonies (one for each tradition) or a single blended ceremony. You can have a religious ceremony and a civil celebration, or weave elements from both cultures throughout.
The reception menu is a perfect place to honor both backgrounds. Have stations or courses representing each cuisine. This is often the element guests appreciate most!
Include both languages in invitations, programs, signage, and during the ceremony. Having a bilingual officiant or providing translations helps all guests feel included.
Consider wearing a traditional outfit from one culture for the ceremony and changing into attire from the other culture for the reception, or incorporate elements from both.
Mix playlists with songs from both cultures. Teach guests a traditional dance from each side. Music transcends language barriers and gets everyone celebrating together.
Don't be afraid to create new traditions that are uniquely yours. Mix a Greek 'Stefana' ceremony with a Jewish 'breaking of the glass', or invent something entirely new that represents your merged story.
Include a printed program or a brief explanation during the ceremony so guests understand the significance of traditions they may not be familiar with. It enriches the experience for everyone.
